We all know that sweating is normal and, most importantly, necessary for a healthy body. We need to sweat to regulate our body temperature and filter toxins out of the body. But what do you do when sweating becomes unbearable and affects your quality of life?

There are a lot of people who have to deal with excessive sweating. Sweating more than normal is called hyperhidrosis and can affect different parts of our body: underarms, palms, scalp, groin area, or feet. There are cases when hyperhidrosis can affect larger areas of the body.

The causes behind hyperhidrosis vary. From genetic predisposition that manifests as focal hyperhidrosis, and is also known as primary hyperhidrosis, to secondary hyperhidrosis that is the effect of an underlying health condition, like hyperthyroidism, obesity, or Parkinson’s disease, hyperhidrosis can’t really be prevented. It can only be treated!

Excessive sweating is not only a matter of discomfort. It can be embarrassing, upsetting, and at times, can cause social isolation. Despite a large number of antiperspirants available on the market, nothing seems to work against hyperhidrosis. Except for Botox! Famously used for cosmetic wrinkle reduction, SweatHelp.org confirms that Botox has been proven to be the most effective treatment against hyperhidrosis.

How does Botox combat hyperhidrosis?

Botox is often used in medical and cosmetic dermatology. It’s a neurotoxin prepared from the botulinum toxin that causes botulism. However, when dosed appropriately, Botox is entirely safe to use in cosmetic procedures and, most importantly, very efficient.

When used to smooth wrinkles it temporarily paralyzes muscles. It does the same thing when used to fight medical conditions like muscle spasms and migraines. When used to stop overactive sweat glands that produce too much sweat, Botox blocks the nerve signals responsible for sweating. Among the many treatments advertised as a solution to excessive sweating, Botox continues to be the most effective long-term solution.

What does a Botox treatment for hyperhidrosis entail?

Patients suffering from hyperhidrosis will have to get Botox injections in the area of concern. However, the injections are usually well-tolerated, especially when administered for excessive underarm sweating. The National Library of Medicine states Axillary hyperhidrosis is among the most common types of excessive sweating and the injections of botulinum toxin are the most effective treatment currently available.

Sweat glands on the hands and feet have also been kept under control with the help of Botox injections and studies show Botox to be very effective against forehead sweat too. Some patients may experience a higher level of discomfort during these procedures due to the increased number of nerves present in the areas.

However, dermatologists who administer Botox injections for hyperhidrosis usually apply numbing cream to the treatment area up to one hour before the procedure. The area gets cleaned, and then the doctor administers several injections using a very tiny needle. The needle will go just below the surface of the skin. The procedure doesn’t take long and requires only one office visit.

Are there side effects to the Botox injections administered for hyperhidrosis?

Many patients report discomfort and a tolerable level of pain during the procedure and may experience swelling, bruising, or tenderness immediately after the treatment. Botox is generally safe to administer for hyperhidrosis as long as the treatment is performed by experienced practitioners.

Some studies include among the potential side effects headaches and flu-like symptoms. Serious side effects of Botox injections like muscle weakness and difficulty breathing are extremely rare.

If everything goes well, you can return to work as soon as you walk out of the doctor’s office. It is best to avoid drinking alcohol or taking aspirin or ibuprofen 24 hours after the procedure and wearing deodorant or taking a shower or bath 12 hours after the treatment.

The first results are visible in a couple of days after you’ve had your Botox treatment. You’ll notice you’ll a decrease in sweating in the area where you had the procedure. For the Botox injections to reach their full potential and completely dry the area of concern, you should wait around two weeks.

For underarm sweating, the effects may last anywhere from four to fourteen months after treatment. It depends on how long your nerves will need to regenerate. However, for other areas affected by excessive sweating, like hands and feet, you may need to go back to your doctor for more Botox injections in six months or so.

Two weeks after the procedure, you should visit your dermatologist for a follow-up consultation. They can assess the area, check the injection pattern, and see if they’ve missed any spots where they should administer Botox injections.

Are Botox injections safe for everyone?

Botox is generally safe to administer and well-tolerated by millions of patients. However, doctors do not recommend Botox treatments for pregnant women or women who are breastfeeding. Moreover, Botox is not recommended for people who have suffered or are suffering from a neuromuscular condition.

Doctors may ask patients on blood thinners to stop taking the medication for a few days before the procedure to prevent bruising but they too can safely benefit from Botox treatment for hyperhidrosis. Make sure you inform your doctor about any medication you’re taking before the procedure. Botox is FDA-approved for axillary hyperhidrosis, but it has been successfully used to reduce sweating in other areas too.

The bottom line is Botox injections work for both wrinkle reduction and hyperhidrosis. And they are safe! Any Botox myths you may have heard have been debunked either by a clinical study, a medicine article, or a doctor’s advice. Botox treatment will not only stop excessive sweating but will also improve quality of life and promote self-confidence. Furthermore, after several procedures, patients usually notice they can go longer between their Botox treatments.
