IPL Photofacial

IPL photofacial is a laser treatment designed to treat age spots and sun damage while reversing the signs of aging. Based on Intense Pulsed Light, the therapy is non-surgical and well-tolerated by our patients. Our specialists use IPL therapy to treat various skin conditions, including sun spots, hyperpigmentation, skin discolorations, facial spider veins, broken capillaries, rosacea, and fine lines. Based on your medical history and skin type, our skincare professionals will assess your skin condition and set an appropriate treatment plan for you to achieve visible results in the shortest period.

What is an IPL photofacial?

During an IPL photofacial, the high-intensity light penetrates the top layer of the skin and gets to the damaged tissues and hyperactive melanin that causes brown spots, blemishes, and freckles. The light turns into heat which is then soaked up by the red blood cells and melanin in your skin.

The high-energy light waves damage the areas where they land and break up melanin. Once fragmented, the melanin starts to fade on the skin’s surface. Furthermore, the damaged hemoglobin stimulates blood flow and facilitates better absorption of melanin.

One of the most appreciated rejuvenation and anti aging cosmetic procedures available on the market, the photofacial treatment treats not only the effects of sun damage on your skin but also stimulates collagen growth and improves skin texture. Moreover, it can be used to treat vascular imperfections, including broken blood vessels and hemangiomas (red birthmarks). The procedure is FDA-approved and can be adjusted according to the patient’s skin type, color, and condition.

What to expect during the procedure?

The procedure is non-invasive and lasts 20-30 minutes. Following a short consultation, your healthcare professional will recommend the number of treatment sessions necessary for the best results. They will assess your skin for various conditions and recommend avoiding certain medications (aspirin, ibuprofen) or activities (tanning, waxing, chemical peels) two weeks before the treatment for minimum side effects.

The duration of the treatment depends on the skin condition and the area exposed to the treatment. Initially, we will apply a topical numbing cream to your face, and you will be given protective glasses. After 20 or 30 minutes, your skin will be ready for the procedure.

Using a handheld device, we will apply the pulses to the areas of concern. You may feel a warm sensation. The intensity of the discomfort depends on the patient’s skin type and sensitivity, varying from a mild sting to the sensation of someone snapping a rubber band on your skin. The treatment is gentle, and since the device has an advanced cooling system, your discomfort should be minimal.

Aftercare

Since it’s a laser treatment, an IPL photofacial requires no recovery time and allows the patient to return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure ends. The treated area may be red and sensitive for a couple of hours and most patients experience a sensation similar to a sunburn. Swelling is also to be expected, but it will be minimal. You can expect your skin to be overly sensitive in the days to follow, so it is best to avoid using hot water until completely healed.

If you have chosen the procedure to treat brown spots, don’t panic if you notice your spots becoming darker than before. This is a normal consequence of the treatment, and they will eventually fade in the days to come. Dark spots can also have a crust and flake. Also a normal side effect and always temporary.

You will notice the first results immediately after the procedure. Your skin will look tighter and smoother and will also begin the natural exfoliation process to remove the dark spots. However, depending on skin types and damage, your healthcare professional may recommend up to 3 sessions scheduled 4-6 weeks apart. The results are permanent but can’t prevent new brown or age spots. For this reason, we recommend our patients schedule maintenance sessions every 6 to 12 months for long-lasting effects.

Frequently Asked Questions

An IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) photofacial can cause some discomfort during the procedure, but it’s usually tolerable. Some people describe it as a sensation similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin.

The level of discomfort varies depending on the individual’s pain tolerance, the area being treated, and the intensity of the light used. However, most people can manage the discomfort with the help of a cooling gel or numbing cream applied before the procedure.

After the procedure, the treated area may feel sensitive or slightly sore, but this usually subsides within a few hours. It’s essential to follow the post-treatment instructions given by the practitioner for minimal discomfort and to promote healing.

An IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) photofacial is a cosmetic procedure that uses high-intensity light therapy to treat various skin conditions, such as damage from sun exposure, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, rosacea, and age spots.

During the procedure, a handheld device delivers pulses of light to the skin, which penetrates deep into the tissue and targets melanin, hemoglobin, and other pigments that cause skin discoloration. The light energy heats up and destroys the pigment cells, which then get absorbed by the body’s natural processes.

IPL photofacial can also stimulate collagen production, which helps to improve the skin’s texture and tone. As a result, the treatment can reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars.

The procedure is non-invasive and typically takes less than an hour, depending on the area being treated. The results are gradual and may require several sessions to achieve the desired outcome. IPL photofacial is considered a safe and effective procedure when performed by a trained and licensed practitioner.

An IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) photofacial works by delivering high-intensity light pulses, which targets melanin, hemoglobin, and other pigments that cause skin discoloration.

The device emits a broad spectrum that can be calibrated to target specific colors and wavelengths of light. The light penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the targeted pigments, which then get destroyed or broken down into smaller particles.

The body’s natural processes then absorb and eliminate the destroyed pigment particles, resulting in clearer, more even-toned skin.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) photofacials are considered safe when performed by a trained and licensed practitioner. However, like any medical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects that should be considered.

The most common side effects of IPL photofacials include mild redness, swelling, and mild discomfort, which typically resolve within a few hours or days after the treatment. Other possible side effects may include temporary hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, blistering, scarring, or infection.

To minimize the risk of side effects and achieve the best results, it’s important to choose a reputable practitioner and follow their pre- and post-treatment instructions carefully. Practitioners may also conduct a skin evaluation and test patch prior to the procedure to ensure that the treatment is safe and effective for the individual.

It’s also important to note that IPL photofacials may not be suitable for everyone, such as pregnant or breastfeeding women, individuals with certain skin conditions or medical conditions, or those taking certain medications or undergoing skin treatments that make the skin more sensitive to light.

It is generally not recommended to undergo an IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) photofacial while breastfeeding. The reason is that the effects of the treatment on breast milk and the infant’s health are not fully understood.

IPL photofacials involve the use of high-intensity light, which can cause thermal injury to the skin, leading to the release of inflammatory mediators that may enter the bloodstream and potentially affect breast milk.

Moreover, the use of topical anesthetics and other skincare products during the procedure may also be absorbed into the bloodstream and passed onto the infant through breast milk.

Therefore it’s recommended to wait until after breastfeeding to undergo IPL photofacials or any other cosmetic treatments. However, it’s always best to consult with a healthcare provider or licensed practitioner before undergoing any cosmetic procedure while breastfeeding.

Before your IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) photofacial, there are several things you should avoid to prepare and ensure the best possible results:

  • Sun exposure: Avoid direct sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners for at least two weeks before the procedure. Sun exposure can increase the risk of skin damage and make the treatment less effective.
  • Skincare products: Stop using any topical skincare products that contain retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) for at least a week before the procedure. These products can make your skin more sensitive to light and increase the risk of side effects.
  • Hair removal: Avoid any hair removal treatments that involve waxing, plucking, or threading for at least a week before the procedure. Even laser hair removal should be avoided too close to the procedure. These treatments can irritate the skin and increase the risk of side effects. Let your practitioner know if you’ve had one of these treatments recently prior to your procedure.
  • Blood-thinning medications: If you’re taking blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin or warfarin, consult with your healthcare provider before the procedure. These medications can increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
  • Makeup: Remove all makeup and skincare products from the treatment area prior to the procedure.

It’s essential to follow your practitioner’s specific pre-treatment instructions to ensure the best possible results and minimize the risk of side effects.

After an IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) photofacial, there are several things you should avoid to ensure the best possible results and minimize the risk of side effects:

  • Sun exposure: Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds for at least two weeks after the procedure. The treated skin may be more sensitive to sunlight and more prone to sun damage.
  • Skincare products: Avoid using any topical skincare products that contain retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) for at least a week after the procedure. These products can irritate the skin and increase the risk of side effects.
  • Hot water: Avoid hot showers, hot tubs, and saunas for at least 48 hours after the procedure. Hot water can increase blood flow to the skin and cause the treated area to become more red and irritated.
  • Physical activity: Avoid strenuous exercise and activities that cause excessive sweating for at least 24 hours after the procedure. Sweat can irritate the treated area and increase the risk of infection.
  • Makeup: Avoid applying makeup to the treated area for at least 24 hours after the procedure.

It’s essential to follow your practitioner’s specific post-treatment instructions to ensure the best possible results and minimize the risk of side effects. If you experience any severe pain, swelling, or other unusual symptoms after the procedure, please contact us immediately.

The recovery time after an IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) photofacial can vary depending on the person’s skin type, the area treated, and the intensity of the treatment. However, most people can expect to recover within a few days to a week after the procedure.

Immediately after the treatment, the skin may appear red and slightly swollen, similar to a mild sunburn. This is a normal reaction and typically subsides within a few hours to a day after the procedure. Applying a cool compress or aloe vera gel can help to soothe the skin and reduce any discomfort.

Over the next few days, the treated area may become darker or form a crust, which will eventually slough off as the skin heals. It’s important to avoid picking at any scabs or crusts to prevent scarring and promote healing.

Most people can resume their normal daily activities, including wearing makeup, within 24 to 48 hours after the procedure. However, it’s important to avoid any activities that may irritate the treated area, such as sun exposure, hot water, or excessive sweating.

We’ll provide you with more specific aftercare instructions after your procedure and it’s critical that you follow them to ensure optimal results.
