PRF Injections

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is an autologous blood concentrate that uses your own blood to help rejuvenate your skin. PRF contains autologous growth factors that stimulate and enhance the healing response. It is used by doctors around the world to accelerate healing for various areas of the body. PRF is rapidly replacing platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in medical spas and plastic surgeons’ offices around the country. This shift from PRP to PRF is because PRF contains more platelets per mcL. PRF also contains leukocytes (WBC) and Mesenchymal Stem Cells that PRP does not have. With PRF, your blood is spun at a low centrifugation and there is no added anticoagulation like there is with PRP. This allows a fibrin matrix to form. The fibrin matrix will help to keep cells more active, allowing for a longer and slower release of growth factors. The rich concentration of cells in PRF will release growth factors over a longer period of time, contributing to an even better rejuvenation process.

PRF Injection Process Process

PRF is a 3-step process. First, we draw your blood into tubes. The number of tubes depends on the amount of surface area we want to cover. The tubes of blood are then spun in a centrifuge. This process will separate the blood cells from all the other nutrient-rich cells that we want. When the centrifugation function is complete, the top layer is collected. This layer of concentrate (PRF) is composed of your own platelets and white blood cells. We can then use the substance in multiple areas of your face for natural rejuvenation.

PRF Injection Benefits and Results

PRF can be injected into several areas of your face to help with dark circles, tear troughs and deep folds, volume loss, wrinkles, and fine lines. A series of 4 initial monthly treatments are recommended with a 6-month touch-up, then annual sessions for maintenance. You may see a slight improvement after your first or second session but you should see the optimal results after 4 sessions.

Aftercare

You may experience bruising, redness, itching, swelling, and/or soreness that may last from 2-5 days following your treatment. It is normal to feel a tingling sensation while the cells are being activated. Ice or cold compresses can be applied to reduce swelling if required. You should avoid aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, and other anti-inflammatory medications for 3 days after your procedure (talk to your doctor before stopping medications that are prescribed). You should try to avoid alcohol, caffeine, and smoking for 3 days after treatment as well. Do not use blood-thinning agents such as vitamin E, vitamin A, Ginko, Garlic, Flax, Cod Liver Oil, or Essential Fatty Acids for at least one week after your treatment (unless directed otherwise by a physician). Avoid vigorous exercise, sun, and heat exposure for at least 2 days after your treatment. Continue increased water intake the first week after your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Avoid taking any anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, aspirin or naproxen for at least seven days prior to the procedure. These medications can thin the blood and increase the risk of bleeding and bruising during the injection process.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours prior to the injection. Alcohol can cause dehydration, which can lead to increased pain and discomfort during and after the procedure.
  • Avoid engaging in physical activity that could cause strain or stress on the area that will be injected with PRF. This includes strenuous exercise or activities such as running or lifting heavy weights.

Platelet-rich fibrin injections are a type of therapy that can help to reduce pain and improve tissue regeneration using the healing properties of your own blood components. The amount of time it takes to see results will vary depending on the individual and their specific condition. Generally, most people start to experience some relief within the first few days after treatment.

In some cases, more noticeable results may take up to a few weeks or even months to appear. This is because PRF injections work by stimulating the body’s natural healing process, which can take time. Additionally, the number of treatments needed for optimal results may vary from person to person.

Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) treatment is a minimally invasive procedure. While there is some discomfort associated with the injection process, most patients report minimal or no pain during or after the procedure.

The injection itself typically causes only mild discomfort as a result of the needle entering the skin. However, this is usually short-lived and can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain medications if necessary. After the injection, many patients experience minor swelling and tenderness in the treated area which should resolve within a few days.

A good candidate for PRF injections is someone who has been struggling with skin issues that haven’t responded to more conventional treatments.

The benefits of PRF injections include improved collagen production, increased hydration, and reduced inflammation. By boosting collagen production, PRF injections can help to reduce wrinkles and fine lines while also improving skin texture and diminishing the appearance of acne scars. The increased hydration helps to plump skin, reducing the appearance of dryness and providing a more youthful look. Finally, the anti-inflammatory properties can help to reduce redness and irritation associated with conditions such as rosacea or acne to provide a more even skin tone.

  • Avoid any strenuous activity or exercise for at least 24 hours following the procedure. This includes activities such as running, weightlifting, and other high-intensity activities.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and heat exposure on the treated area for at least 48 hours after the procedure. Heat can cause inflammation of the treatment site, which can reduce the effectiveness of PRF injections.
  • Avoid taking any anti-inflammatory medications or supplements such as ibuprofen or aspirin for at least 48 hours after your PRF injections. These medications interfere with the body’s natural healing process and can reduce the benefits of PRF injections.
