What is Botox for hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating. Many people suffer from excessive sweating in the underarms, even when they aren’t hot. Sometimes regular antiperspirants are not enough for these individuals or they sweat even when they are cold or stressed. It can often be something that a person becomes self-conscious about. Botox injections can be a great treatment option for these individuals. Botox is injected into the underarms and it works by blocking the nerve signals responsible for sweating, stopping the sweat glands from producing too much sweat.
What can I expect?
It takes 1 initial treatment of Botox under each arm to see results. The process normally takes about 30-45 minutes and it is generally very safe. We start by cleaning and marking the area of concern. Botox is then injected about every 1.5-2 cm in the marked area. It is often about 15-20 injections under each underarm. People who receive underarm Botox injections can see results in as little as 3-5 days after treatment, however, it will take 2 weeks to see the full effects.
How long will it last?
Depending on the individual, retreatment is typically needed 4-6 months following the initial session. Similarly to normal treatment with Botox, over time, patients can go longer between treatments. It can last up to 12 months.
After the treatment
Individuals can go home immediately after Botox treatment. They should avoid exercise, and not have hot baths or showers for the rest of the day. You can apply ice to the area and take a mild pain reliever if you have some tenderness. Normal activity can be resumed the following day.
